Thirty-eight students, who are part of the Self Reliance Youth Development Organisation, were the fortunate recipients of scholarships courtesy of Sampars Cash and Carry Ltd as a reward for their accomplishments in their schoolwork.

Among this year’s recipients was Kimone Wallace, a graduate of the Merl Grove High School and a beneficiary of the Sampars Self Reliance Youth Development programme, who achieved eight grade ones in her CSEC exams. As a reward for her hardwork, she will receive J$100,000 from the Group Chief Financial Officer  Ian Kelly. She has been offered an internship opportunity in the accounting department at Derrimon Trading Company Limited. This internship aligns with Kimone’s pursuit of studies in accounting at the University of Technology (UTECH).

The Self Reliance Youth Development Organisation serves families within and outside of the corporate area, specifically those in Sampars’ surrounding communities. This year’s contributions total J$600,000, which was handed over to participating students. The organisation’s president, Wilbert Edwards, shared: “Throughout its existence, the Self Reliance Youth Development Organization has served as a valuable resource for parents, enabling them to contribute to the realisation of their children’s aspirations. This organisation has nurtured exceptional individuals from various communities across Jamaica, paving the way for and producing doctors, lawyers, and spiritual leaders. Aligned with Sampars Cash & Carry Limited, the Self Reliance Youth Development Organization persists in strengthening the profound connection between parents and their children, cultivating a lasting heritage of accomplishments.”

The programme is specifically aimed at individuals categorised as ‘dropouts’ during their secondary education. It serves as a pathway to an improved quality of life and also motivates all bursary recipients to set an example for their peers. By doing so, they can extend this positive influence, ultimately contributing to the development of productive Jamaican citizens.

Past and current students of the organisation will persist in receiving the crucial opportunity and backing required to successfully navigate their educational journeys and extend them beyond, guided by the core belief that education forms the bedrock for achieving social mobility and economic progress.
