Today, the world joins Jamaica in celebrating the birthday of one of its most recognisable sons, Usain Bolt. The eight-time Olympic gold medallist and 11-time World Athletics Championships gold medallist has cemented his place in sporting history, dominating the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay while becoming synonymous with speed, excellence and Jamaican pride.

Bolt remains the world-record holder in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m, with extraordinary times of 9.58 seconds, 19.19 seconds and 36.84 seconds, respectively. His 100m record, set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, came after he had already lowered the record twice, while his 200m mark in Berlin surpassed the record he himself had set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also played a starring role in Jamaica’s record-breaking 4x100m relay teams, helping to produce three world records.

But beyond the records, medals and the famous “Lightning Bolt” pose is a man with a deep love for family, friendship, music, dominoes and the country that shaped him. Bolt’s story is as much about the person as it is about the athlete, so on his birthday, we take a look at five things that reveal a little more about the person behind one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen.. Here are five things to know about Jamaica’s most famous sprinting son.

1. Dominoes is his kind of competition

For a man whose entire career was built around speed, Usain Bolt has a surprising love for a game that requires patience, strategy and a whole lot of talking. Dominoes has long been one of Bolt’s favourite pastimes, a passion he picked up growing up in rural Trelawny, watching his father play. He has described the game as a real passion and recalled spending hours outside his Kingston home playing with friends, chatting, laughing and simply chilling. And make no mistake, Bolt is competitive about it. He has even spoken about playing against seasoned domino lovers such as former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh and reggae icon Beres Hammond.

2.     Before he was the fastest man alive, he wanted to be a cricketer

It is almost hard to imagine Usain Bolt in anything other than Jamaica’s black, green and gold on the track, but cricket was actually his first sporting love. Growing up in Sherwood Content, Trelawny, Bolt spent much of his childhood playing cricket and became a talented young fast bowler. He admired Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and even dreamed of playing cricket professionally. His speed initially seemed more useful for bowling and fielding than sprinting. It was only after a cricket coach encouraged him to try athletics, and his talent became impossible to ignore, that the track eventually won out. His father also played a role in pushing him towards the track during his high school years.

3.     Away from the spotlight, family comes first

For all the fame, records and international attention, Bolt’s identity as a son, partner and father remains central to who he is. He has spoken openly about the influence of his parents, Jennifer and the late Wellesley Bolt, particularly the values of discipline, manners and respect that shaped him growing up. As a father himself, Bolt has embraced the role wholeheartedly. He and his partner, Kasi Bennett, are parents to daughter Olympia and twin sons Thunder and Saint Leo, and he has spoken about wanting to give his children the same grounding and guidance his own parents gave him.

There is also something particularly touching about the way he continues to speak about his father. Wellesley was not just his dad but a major influence on the athlete he became, from his love of cricket to the work ethic he instilled in his son. Even as Bolt has built a life of his own, family remains one of the anchors beneath the larger-than-life personality.

4.     Small circle, big love, and even bigger vibes

Bolt may be one of the most recognisable people on the planet, but that doesn’t mean everyone gets a front-row seat to his life. He has always placed tremendous value on genuine friendships and loyalty. One of the clearest examples is his longtime best friend Nugent “NJ” Walker Jr., whom Bolt has known since primary school and who eventually became his personal manager. Bolt has described their friendship as one built on balance, he is the outgoing, people-oriented one, while NJ is more of an indoors, information-focused personality.

5.     Jamaica isn’t just where he is from, it’s part of who he is

Perhaps one of the most endearing things about Usain Bolt is that global fame has never erased the Jamaican identity at the centre of his story. From the way he speaks about growing up in the countryside to his continued support of Jamaican athletes, businesses, culture and communities, Bolt has consistently used his international platform to put Jamaica in the spotlight. He has even said that one of his biggest priorities is uplifting Jamaica because the country helped make him who he is.

That commitment was formally recognised in May 2025, when Bolt was appointed Global Ambassador for Tourism by the Jamaica Tourist Board. The appointment essentially formalised what he had already been doing for years, selling Jamaica to the world simply by being unapologetically Jamaican. Bolt said he intends to continue representing the country, keeping the flag flying high and making Jamaica proud.
