Jamaica’s swimmer Alia Atkinson was eliminated in the heats of the women’s 100 metres breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday (July 25).

Atkinson finished in a time of 1:07.70 minutes to place third in Heat Three of the event, which was won by Kotryna Teterevkova of Lithuania in 1:06.82 with Anna Charlott Darcel Elendt of Germany ending second in 1:06.96.
Atkinson started the race the best as she led from the start to touch at the turn first.

Towards the end, however, Atkinson lost tremendous ground as she tires and was passed by Teterevkova and Elendt

The time places Atkinson out of the top 16 swimmers that advance to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in Heat Five, Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa set a new Olympic record of 1:04.82 minute to erase the 1:04.93 set by Lilly King of the United State at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

It enabled Schoemaker to enter the semi-finals with the fastest time.
