Two Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) police constables were offered bail in the sum of J$650,0000 when they appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court on Thursday (August 24).
Constables R. Boothe and M. Hamilton, both assigned to the Central Village Police Station in the parish, were granted bail by Parish Court judge, Jacquline Wilcott, upon hearing a bail application by their attorney.
As a condition of their bail, a stop order was issued for them leaving the island with the judge also imposing reporting conditions for them to report to the police weekly. They are to return to court on October 9 when a trial date will be set.
The two cops were taken into custody two weeks ago after they were caught enticing a motorist into paying them money for not being ticketed. It is understood that the cops in question were caught on camera by a team from the JCF’s Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB), who were in close proximity.
Sources tell Our Today that a motorist was towing his schoolmate’s vehicle, which was disabled along Mandela Highway when both vehicles were stopped by the two policemen just outside the Central Village Police Station. The police purportedly enticed the motorist into paying money for not prosecuting him for towing a disabled vehicle along the highway.
He was reportedly paid J$3,000 and was released to proceed along the way. The transaction was witnessed by the IPROB team, which detained the two cops.
