China has committed to support Jamaica in exploring funding opportunities presented by the Global Development Initiative.

China, which is Jamaica’s number one nation partner in terms of development financing, pledged its unwavering support and alliance with Jamaica during a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, North Street head office on August 2 by a delegation from the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica led by its Ambassador Chen Daojiang.

During the visit Ambassador Daojiang held bilateral talks with Portfolio Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. alongside minister of state, Dr Norman Dunn and Permanent Secretary Colette Roberts Risden. In those talks, Minister Charles emphasised the Jamaican Government’s dedication to bolstering bilateral ties with China.

He acknowledged the longstanding positive ties between Jamaica and its previous Chinese ambassadors, whilst pointing to the significance of Ambassador Daojiang’s visit to the ministry. In response, Ambassador Daojiang expressed his satisfaction in connecting with the Jamaican ministers and acknowledged the meeting as a valuable opportunity to explore shared labor market concerns.

A significant portion of their discussion revolved around the potential for incorporating Chinese proficiency into the Jamaican industry. This includes potential avenues for enhancing the skills of the Jamaican workforce, especially with regards to training.

A notable interest from the Jamaican side was the use of simulators for training scenarios where traditional face-to-face methods might not be feasible. The talks delved into the possibility of nurturing a cadre of expert builders, aiming to expand opportunities for the Jamaican workforce.
