COVID-19 cases in Jamaica continue to trend down, with this week’s report indicating the number of new cases declined from 75 between August 1 and 7, to 54 between August 8 and 14.
According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness’s latest report on the virus, the island’s positivity rate also declined from 20.3 per cent to 16.5 per cent, meaning fewer people, when tested, have a positive result.
However, 13 COVID deaths were confirmed. Eleven of the deaths occurred in 2023, and the remaining two are from 2021.
There are now 107 active cases of the virus after 12 patients recovered from the virus between August 8 and 14.
The majority of new cases continue to reside in Kingston and St Andrew, with the parishes recording 19. St Catherine maintains its second-place stance with 11, while St James recorded six new cases. There were no new cases recorded in St Mary and St Thomas.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Jamaica has recorded 156,140 cases of the virus. More than 103,000 citizens have also died from COVID in Jamaica since 2020.
The health ministry continues to push vaccination as a mode of protection from the virus. Citizens are also encouraged to wear masks and sanitise where they see fit.
