MBJ Airports Limited, operators of the Sangster International Aiport, has instituted temporary traffic changes for the transportation hub amid chronic landside congestion affecting Montego Bay. 

The aiport operators indicated that the traffic changes take effect today (January 6) and will primilary affect travel to and from the Arrival and Departure areas. 

“We seek the cooperation of all airport users to be guided by the directional signage and personnel where applicable as we seek to enhance the airport experience and improve service levels,” the Sangster International operators added.

With an influx of activity coinciding with the winter tourist season, traffic congestion has been commonplace since early December, which is said reach its worst between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Sharon Heslop, commercial business development director at MBJ Airports, told the Jamaica Gleaner that plans are under way to widen the roundabout leading into the facility, which is expected to greatly alleviate the gridlock. 

In the meantime, as the winter tourist season is in full swing, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced on Friday that the Montego Bay-based aiport launched six e-gates to enhance immigration efficiency.

“Operational as of last week, the e-gates eliminates the need for immigration officers on the frontline, offering a faster & more convenient experience. Additionally, Kingston will soon follow suit, as e-gates are set to be installed, with testing slated to begin shortly,” Holness explained on X.com, formerly Twitter.
