The list of 10 nominees for World Athletics ‘Female Athlete of the Year’ award was today (November 23) halved, with Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah still in the running to claim the coveted award.

World Athletics, announcing its shortlisted finalists on Tuesday, also hailed the five women—Thompson-Herah, Sifan Hassan, Faith Kipyegon, Sydney McLaughlin and Yulimar Rojas—for producing “exceptional performances across a range of athletics disciplines in 2021, at the Tokyo Olympic Games, one-day meeting circuits and other events around the world”.

With eight days to go until the virtual staging of the 2021 World Athletics Awards, the sporting body said preliminary voting closed on November 6.

On the men’s side, the five finalists for ‘Male Athlete of the Year’ are Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, Norway’s Karsten Warholm, US shot putter Ryan Crouser, and Swedish pole vaulter Monda Duplantis.

Jamaicans will be looking forward to the December 1 announcement after Thompson-Herah ‘disappointingly’ lost out to Canadian swimmer Maggie MacNeil as top athlete of the Tokyo Games, according to the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
