Thierry Breton, commissioner for internal market of the European Union, has voiced serious concerns regarding X, formerly known as Twitter, social media platform’s role in disseminating illegal content and disinformation within the European Union (EU).
In a letter addressed to Elon Musk, owner of X, on Tuesday, October 10, citing the recent terrorist attacks being carried out by Hamas against Israel, Breton reminded Musk of the requirements laid out by the Digital Services Act (DSA), emphasising the need for transparency and diligent content moderation.

The EU commissioner’s letter outlined key areas of concern: consistency and clarity with policy, timely and objective content removal, and the implementation of mitigation measures against disinformation.
Musk has been urged to collaborate with law enforcement authorities and Europol, ensuring prompt responses to their requests.
Breton also hinted at forthcoming requests for addressing other issues related to DSA compliance, emphasising the need for a swift, accurate, and comprehensive response within the next 24 hours. The EU Commission plans to include this response in its assessment file on the platform’s compliance with the DSA. The letter reminded Musk that non-compliance could result in penalties.
