The GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport continues to strengthen its role as a national leader in sport education and development through two innovative partnerships designed to build capacity among youth athletes and emerging sport entrepreneurs.
In a significant step toward integrating sport and education, the College has formalised an agreement with Mt Pleasant Football Academy. A 45-hour Sport Management course was tailored for male student-athletes under the age of 18. This initiative will equip young footballers with foundational knowledge in areas such as sport administration, governance, finance and planning, leadership, marketing, and event planning.

The programme underscores the importance of dual career pathways, ensuring that young athletes are prepared not only for performance on the field but also for opportunities within the broader sport industry. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to holistic athlete development and long-term sustainability for the wider sport industry.
A total of eight young men participated in the programme and all eight completed the semester successfully. The three credit course is transferable for College studies if required.

The certificates were presented in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, April 14.
Business of Sport Pitch Series
In another innovative move, the College has also partnered with the Development Bank of Jamaica to launch a Business of Sport Pitch Series aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within the sport sector. This series will provide a structured platform for aspiring sport entrepreneurs to develop, refine, and present business ideas across key areas such as sport services, technology, media and manufacturing and distribution.

The student-athletes got some well needed tips from business experts to include Gary Matalon, Norman Peart, Maureen Smith and Rani Sarjuh. All four attended a think tank with the 17 participants who all qualified for the next round, following a successful one-minute pitch two weeks ago.
Participants will benefit from mentorship, industry exposure, and potential access to development financing, positioning the initiative as a catalyst for new business creation and economic growth within Jamaica’s sport ecosystem.
Both programmes form part of GC Foster College’s ongoing outreach mandate to bridge education, industry, and community development. By targeting youth athletes and entrepreneurs, the College continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sport in Jamaica.
The grand finale is set for Tuesday, May 5.
“These initiatives represent a deliberate strategy to expand the impact of sport beyond competition,” said a College representative. “We are building pathways for education, enterprise, and empowerment through sport,” says Programme Coordinator, Janiel Smith.
