Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama extended an invitation to Jamaican sprint legend, Asafa Powell to help inspire the next generation of athletes from the West African nation.

The Jamaican world record holder was given a personal invitation by the president during his recent four-day State Visit to Jamaica. He is seeking Powell’s experience and knowledge for his country’s next generation of athletes while strengthening the growing trade, tourism, cultural, and sporting ties between Jamaica and Ghana in the interim.

While touring the Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann, the Ghanian leader expressed his desire to have the sports legend play a role in motivating young Ghanian athletes and also promoting excellence in track and fields. Mahama said the proposed visit forms part of a broader effort to deepen people-to-people connection between the two countries through sports, youth development, and cultural exchange.

Powell as Special Guest of Ghana

For President Mahama, Asafa Powell would be encouraging the emerging athletes; “we will invite him as a special guest to come and inspire our young people.” The invitation builds on an already strong personal connection between Powell and Ghana.

His wife, Alyshia Miller-Powell, is of Ghanaian heritage and she, along with their two children, had joined President Mahama during his visit to the historic heritage site. Powell, a two-time 100-meter world record holder and one of Jamaica’s most decorated sprinters, is widely credited with helping to usher in Jamaica’s modern era of sprint dominance before the rise of Usain Bolt.

Throughout his career, Powell became the first athlete to run under 10 seconds in the 100 meters, doing so more than 100 times with his personal best of 9.72 seconds, establishing himself as one of the sport’s most consistent performers.

Jamaica/Ghana sports diplomacy

Beyond his achievement on track, Powell has increasingly focused on youth mentorship, coaching, and sports development since retiring in 2022, making him a fitting ambassador aimed at encouraging young athletes. Sports has become an important pillar of the diplomatic relationship between Jamaica and Ghana, with both nations sharing proud athletic tradition.

For Ghana, bringing one of the greatest sprinting figures to interact with young athletes is expected to provide motivation and expose aspiring competitors to the mind-set and discipline required to succeed at the highest level of international competition. 

For Jamaica, the invitation highlights the enduring global influence of its athletes, long after their competitive careers have ended. Powell’s legacy now extend beyond medals and world records, to include mentorships, international sports diplomacy, and the promotions of athletics as a tool for youth empowerment.

If finalised, the visit would further reinforce the historic bond between Jamaica and Ghana while demonstrating how sports continues to serve as a bridge connecting the African continent and the Caribbean.
