Prime Minister Andrew Holness has sought to dismiss rrumours of an early general election.
The prime minister, who was speaking at a town hall meeting on Thursday, August 31, in Montego Bay, St James, said: “I hear everybody talking about elections all of a sudden. We are a democracy, when elections are due they are due but we must not postpone, defer or interrupt our progress for elections.”
According to Holness, elections must be routine, short, orderly and seamless.
In an apparent swipe at the Opposition, Holness pointed out that there are powermongers who seek power but neglect the progress of the Jamaican people.
“But there are those who want to use elections to disrupt progress, so let me just say to you my mind is not on election, my mind is on ensuring that those who are at the base of the society who still have not felt the change that is happening.Tthat you will get the chance because your government is not taking its eyes off managing your business and your affairs,” he said.
The next general election is not due until 2025, while the local government election is due in February of next year.
