This was supposed to be the season where Manchester United began to get back to the glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Under Michael Carrick, Manchester United finished third last season with 20 wins, 11 draws and 7 losses. The team also qualified for the Champions League.

This saw Carrick, a former Manchester United player, getting the nod as full-time coach, thus moving up from his caretaker position. It was well deserved.

The mission this season is to do better, hunt down both Arsenal and neighbour Manchester City to win the EPL trophy.  This meant starting the new season strong, notching up successive victories.

Today Manchester United took on newly promoted Hull City and were favourites to win. Instead, Carrick’s men put in a turgid performance, underestimating a team built by Sergej Jakirovic.

Hull City scored the opening goal in the 17th minute, Semi Ajayi finding the net with a shot in the box from a corner.

Manchester United, led by Bruno Fernandes, just couldn’t find the answers today.

Nobel Mendy got Hull’s second goal in the 38th minute, and it looked like it would be a long afternoon for Manchester United.

In the second half, Carrick brought on Marcus Rashford, hoping he could up the tempo and raise United out of its torpor. He struggled to impress, and some say you could see why Barcelona chose not to sign him after his loan spell there. 

The Hull fans had the KC Stadium rocking. This was a historic win and a fantastic way to get this season now in the Premier League underway. 

After the game, Michael Carrick commented: “ We have a bit to improve on -It was never going to be perfect. One game doesn’t change the direction of everything. It doesn’t change the direction of the football club”.

A disappointed Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, disconsolately said: “Same mistakes as we did last season, every away game. We give too much of the ball to them. I think they have in the beginning of the game-first 20 minutes-the Hull goalkeeper was the one who had more touches on the ball.

“Too much time- I think we need to press a little bit more; we need to be a little bit more aggressive.”

Hull hurt Manchester United with goals from two set pieces.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic talked about his side’s set piece strategy but didn’t disclose any secrets.

“It’s a secret. We tried something on Friday. We had some plans there to try to punish them, how they stand at a wide free kick.”
