The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has advised that the general public will see more police officers suited in body cameras as it continues the phased roll-out of the devices geared towards enhanced transparency and accountability.

In a social media statement, the JCF shared the widely held view that the cameras will help to enhance public trust in law enforcement.

“The presence of a camera serves as a visual reminder that actions are being recorded, encouraging both officers and civilians to act in accordance with established protocols and guidelines. This can help de-escalate potentially volatile situations and foster positive relationships between the police and the community they serve,” the statement read.

Citizens were informed that the body cameras would be worn by officers across the country, especially those engaged in public interaction.

The heightened use of the devices comes after concerns were raised by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) about the absence of body-worn cameras in incidents where 119 civilians were fatally shot by agents of the state over the period January to October 2023.

It was announced in April 2023 that the Ministry of National Security would procure 1,000 additional body cameras for officers. This is in addition to 400 body cameras already owned by the JCF.
