Khadija Shaw today (June 11) confirmed that she was leaving FC Girondins de Bordeaux where she had spent her first two seasons as a professional footballer, but she has not indicated whether she will be joining Manchester City in England’s Women’s Super League as has been reported in international media.

Shaw, 24, was Bordeaux’s leading striker this season with 22 goals but asked for time off from national duties to rest and consider her options as she is reported to be close to a deal that would see her take her goal-scoring skills to England.

Jamaica is currently playing in the WNT Summer Series in the United States where, on Thursday, the national team beat Nigeria 1-0, the goal coming from the boots of Deneisha Blackwood.

However, there is no doubt that Shaw has decided to leave France based on her post on Instagram today.

SHAW’S MESSAGE TO BORDEAUX FANS

“I would like to start by saying thank you to FC Girondins de Bordeaux for giving me the opportunity to grow and become a better footballer. Thank you to my teammates and staff for making me feel at home since I arrived. I take with me two years of memories, lessons and amazing moments.

“Lastly, the fans, your never-ending love and support have always pushed me to go the extra distance. You were instrumental in our achievement, especially this season. I have no doubt that the club will continue to progress and reap deserving success. All the best and good luck for the future.”

Shaw, who has scored 42 goals for Jamaica, making her the most prolific striker in the country’s history, regardless of gender, is being sought to add depth to City’s roster of strikers and share the goal-scoring burden with England international Ellen White.

She would also offer head coach Gareth Taylor a different option, tactically.

Her exploits for club and country were recently lauded by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).

“We are extremely proud of Khadija and the sterling performances she has managed in France. She is the embodiment of hard work, resilience and discipline, qualities that make her stand out among her peers. We look forward to her playing a leading role for Jamaica into the Women’s Qualifiers beginning in November 2021, confident that Jamaica has one of the best footballers on the globe.”

JFF President Michael Ricketts

“Shaw, the leading goal scorer for Jamaica with 42 goals, won the Golden Boot in the French Women’s First Division scoring 22 goals for Bordeaux FC. She was included in the division’s team of the season and her team clinched a spot in the Women’s Champions League for next season,” JFF President Michael Ricketts said.
