Lionel Messi becomes the second person to hit 500 million followers on Instagram.

Fellow football star, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, holds the number one spot on the popular app.

Instagram’s current top five most-followed are:

  1. Instagram: 669 million
  2. Cristiano Ronaldo: 662 million
  3. Lionel Messi: 500 million
  4. Selena Gomez: 429 million
  5. Kylie Jenner: 400 million

Argentina and Portugal fans are going to have to battle it out for the top spot. However, with a hefty 162 million followers gap, an Instagram match-up anytime soon is doubtful.
