The May Pen Hospital in Clarendon is among the first public health facilities to benefit from the introduction of an electronic health records (EHR) system in Jamaica.

In a statement by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the system is to be implemented by November, with staff members currently undergoing training.

The EHR is a paperless system for patient records. It will facilitate the upload and sharing of records among healthcare providers, among other functionalities.

Funded under the Health Systems Strengthening Programme (HSSP) by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and €10 million from the European Union, the US$50-million project is expected to improve patient’s experience at hospitals.

Other public health facilities to benefit in this phase of implementation are Spanish Town Hospital, St. Ann’s Bay Hospital, Chapelton Community Hospital, Mocho Health Centre, May Pen East Health Centre, May West Health Centre, Greater Portmore Health Centre, St. Jago Park Health Centre, Old Harbour Health Centre, St Ann’s Bay Health Centre, Ocho Rios Health Centre, and Brown’s Town Health Centre.
