The Rural Water Supply Limited (RWSL) is leading efforts to replenish the underground limestone aquifer in Innswood, St Catherine—and, in the process, to serve the wider Portmore/Bernard Lodge areas of the parish.

Homer Davis, State Minister in the Ministry of Local Government & Rural Development, on a tour of the Artificial Underground Recharge System last Tuesday (July 13), was impressed with the sheer scale of the facility.

Situated on 68 acres of land, the Artificial Underground Recharge System’s main function is to divert approximately five million gallons of water per day from the Rio Cobre through the National Irrigation Commission (NIC) Canal during the wet season.

This water is allowed to settle to remove sediments and other impurities before being injected into limestone wells to recharge the underground aquifer. The system also serves to replenish the abstractions from wells into the Portmore/Bernard Lodge area.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has directed that the operation and maintenance of the facility fall under the purview of the RWSL, an agency of the Ministry of Local Government.
