More Diasporans in America have been welcomed into the Jamaican citizenry, as 40 individuals have received their welcome letters, accompanied by official citizenship documents.

Yesterday, Jamaica’s Consul General in New York, Oliver Mair signed over 40 welcome letters, which accompany the official citizenship documents to newly minted Jamaicans who received their Citizenship by Descent.

Over 1,322 individuals were granted citizenship by descent last year at the Consulate of Jamaica – New York. There continues to be an increase in applications received.

Citizenship by Descent

Citizenship by Descent allows eligible people born outside Jamaica to become Jamaican citizens through their family connection to Jamaica. It is designed for individuals who have Jamaican parents, grandparents, or, in some cases, Jamaican lineage that qualifies under Jamaica’s citizenship laws.

Once approved, an individual becomes a Jamaican citizen with the same rights and privileges enjoyed by citizens of Jamaica. Many Jamaicans who currently represent the country on sports teams like our Reggae Girlz, Jamaican Basketball, Jamaican Ice Hockey, etc. and entertainers like megastar, Gramps Morgan have exercised their claim to become Jamaicans.

Jamaicans.com’s Xavier & Karen Murphy’s daughter, Brianna also recently expressed how extra special this moment for her.
