Jamaican industry and the motoring public should welcome a reduction in pump costs this week, despite a mixed pricing outlook released by State-owned refinery, Petrojam.
Petrojam, in its closely watched petroleum product price index, slashed 87-octane gasolene by J$2.06 to open at an introductory price of J$166.39 per litre, after applied taxes effective midnight, Thursday (January 4).
Coinciding with the maiden week of the new year, pump prices are trending lower after a fortnight of increases by the refinery—emphasising the lingering volatility of petroleum globally.
This week’s price cuts were most pronounced for kerosene oil and ultra-low sulphur diesel, which each fell J$4.50 and $4.37, while an 85-cent rise in baseline butane costs was conversely the most prominent.
It is expected that retailers will add their mark-ups to the announced prices.
