The LGBTQ community is growing and becoming a force.

According to a  Gallup poll released yesterday (February 17), more adults in America are identifying as LGBTQ, now more so than at any time over the last decade.

In fact, over the last 10 years, the number has doubled.

“The increase in LGBT identification in recent years largely reflects the higher prevalence of such identities among the youngest US adults compared with the older generations they are replacing in the United States adult population,” wrote Gallup.

The poll revealed that 10.5 per cent of millennials identify as LGBTQ with the figure for baby boomers and Generation X falling below 10 per cent.

As many of 57 per cent of Americans in the LGBTQ bracket identify as bisexual – that is now four per cent of the total US population. The poll of 12,416 American adults found that 21 per cent of LGBTQ people saw themselves as gay, 14 per cent lesbian and 10 per cent transgender.

What does the future hold?

Gallup sees one in 10 millennials and one in five Gen Z identifying as LGBTQ. That’s 10 per cent of the American population.

“These young adults are coming of age including coming to terms with their sexuality or gender identity at a time when Americans increasingly accept gays, lesbians and transgender people, and LGBT individuals enjoy increasing legal protection against discrimination,” surmised Gallup.

Speaking with USA Today, Gallup’s senior editor Jeff Jones added: “I think it speaks to society changing in terms of acceptance of people with different sexual orientations and gender identities and people’s willingness to identify that way.”
