The National Water Commission (NWC) says it has put measures in place to minimise disruption to its usual water supply to sections of Kingston and St Andrew during the rehabilitation of a well at the Bybrook facility in St Catherine.

The well is being rehabilitated to remedy a decline in the volume of water normally extracted from the water source. According to the water utlity, approximately 25 per cent of the 615 feet well is now backfilled with debris. Perforations that allow the water to pass through the casting have also become blocked, restricting inflows to the well.

Rehabilitation works to extend the infrastructure are expected to run from January 16 to February 6.

To minimise inconvenience to the public, the NWC says it will use alternative sources for Portmore and sections of St Andrew, arrange for water trucking to customers at elevated sections, and prepare a temporary water supply schedule where necessary.

The areas in St Catherine likely to be impacted include Waterford, Gregory Park, Independence City, Cumberland, West Cumberland, and Westchester. Additionally, Garveymeade, Portsmouth, Newlands, Christian Gardens, Hamilton Gardens, Portmore Mall, and the PAJ complex are likely to be disrupted.

Areas in St Andrew, such as Marcus Garvey Drive, sections of Spanish Town Road, and sections of downtown Kingston that are boosted by water along Spanish Town Road, are also likely to be impacted by the rehabilitation works.
