Calls for more transformative vision for Jamaica’s economy
The People’s National Party welcomes the Government’s decision to resume the development of Government Service Centres through Jamaica’s post office network, an initiative which began under the administration of the Most Honourable P.J. Patterson, with the formation of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica. Improving access to public services, particularly for rural communities and underserved populations, is an important objective that has long enjoyed bipartisan value.
While the resumption of this initiative is a positive step, the PNP believes Jamaica must now move beyond simply co-locating government services and embrace a more ambitious vision for the future of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica.
This announcement also aligns with proposals advanced by the Opposition during the recent Parliamentary Debates, where the People’s National Party outlined a far more ambitious vision for the future of the Postal Corporation of Jamaica.

Opposition Spokesman on Trade, Industry and Global Logistics, G. Anthony Hylton, argued that Jamaica’s network of post offices should not only provide government services but should be transformed into a national platform for entrepreneurship, digital commerce and export development. “Our vision extends beyond administrative convenience,” the Opposition Spokesman said. “We see every post office becoming a centre of economic opportunity, a place where entrepreneurs can access digital business services, logistics solutions, e-commerce platforms, export support and financial services that allow them to compete locally, regionally and globally.”
The PNP has proposed transforming the Postal Corporation of Jamaica locations into a National SME Incubator and E-Commerce Enabling Platform that would help bridge one of the greatest barriers facing Jamaican micro, small and medium-sized enterprises: affordable access to logistics, digital technology, payment systems, financing and export infrastructure.
Under this model, post offices would evolve into:
- Digital Business Hubs supporting entrepreneurs and start-ups;
- E-commerce fulfilment and last-mile logistics centres;
- Export gateways connecting local producers with international markets;
- Access points for digital government services, financial inclusion and business development.
Importantly, the Opposition has consistently maintained that this transformation must be undertaken in partnership with the private sector, whose investments, innovation and expertise in logistics, technology and distribution are essential to building a modern, competitive ecosystem.
“The Government should not attempt to do this alone. Jamaica already has private sector partners with world-class capabilities in logistics, digital payments, technology and distribution. Government should create the enabling environment and work collaboratively to build a national network that empowers entrepreneurs and expands economic opportunity.”
The PNP believes that Jamaica’s post office network represents one of the country’s most underutilised strategic assets. With more than two hundred locations distributed across every parish, these facilities can become engines of inclusive economic growth by connecting communities to markets, technology, finance and global trade.
“Jamaica’s future competitiveness depends on creating opportunities for every entrepreneur, every farmer, every artisan and every small business to participate in the digital economy. Our post offices can become the gateway to that future,” the Spokesman concluded.
