A Police constable was shot and injured Wednesday afternoon (October 11) while performing routine traffic duty on the Cousin’s Cove main road in Hanover.

The injuries sustained are not believed to be life-threatening, and the injured officer is currently receiving medical care.

According to official reports, two constables were conducting routine traffic duties when they signalled a motorcyclist to stop. The driver, upon reaching the officers, opened gunfire on one of the policemen. The other constable escaped injury.

In a statement, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) says it condemns acts of violence against its members.

“Such incidents not only endanger the lives of our officers but also threaten the very fabric of our society and the safety of our citizens. The JCF is investigating this matter to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” the JCF stated.

An appeal was also made for anyone with information concerning the incident to contact local authorities by calling the 119 police emergency line or Crime Stop at 311.
