Scotiabank has denied claims that its staff members are being questioned by investigators of the attack on a Beryllium armoured truck at its Mandeville branch.
In a statement released today, the financial institution said it has not been advised by the police that any of its employees is being questioned in connection with the attack.
It further noted that Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey also dismissed the reports on local radio. “There is no truth that bank staff are suspects, or in custody or being questioned,” he said in the interview.
“We, therefore, request a public apology on all media outlets and a full retraction with immediate effect at the same level of prominence in all public media, [including] Primetime news, public radio news, website, newspaper, and all social media outlets,” Scotiabank demanded.
Consequently, the bank said the Mandeville branch will be closed today at 12 noon in a bid to manage the negative impact of the robbery. Scotiabank has apologised to its customers for the inconvenience, urging their patience and understanding as they seek to restore normality at the branch.
Security guards from Beryllium were challenged by gunmen who opened gunfire on them during a robbery at the Caledonia Avenue branch of Scotiabank on August 25.
Reports are that the gunmen were chased by police, but managed to escape with two bags of cash. The value of the amount stolen has not yet been disclosed.
Six persons with gunshot wounds are now being treated at the Mandeville Regional Hospital.
Investigations are ongoing, with more updates to come.
