Nickeisha Walsh, executive director of the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB), emphasised the agency’s commitment to its customers by providing a range of flexible loan-repayment options.

Contrary to the perception among some individuals from the older generation that SLB loans are expensive and never-ending, Walsh highlighted that the SLB offers the lowest interest rates for any educational loan repayment in the country.

According to Walsh, the SLB has taken significant steps to diversify its loan-repayment options, making it more convenient for borrowers. She mentioned that the interest rates can be as low as four per cent, especially with the special benefits provided by the agency.

Additionally, in addressing common misconceptions about SLB loans, she said, “There’s a notion for persons coming up in our older generation that SLB loans are expensive, and you’ll never finish paying your loan. But one thing I want people to know is that the SLB offers the lowest interest rates for any school product.”

Walsh went on to explain the various loan products available, including the Pay As You Study and the postgraduate loan. The ‘Pay As You Study’ product allows employed parents, guardians, and spouses to take a loan on behalf of students with an interest rate as low as six per cent per annum.

“There’s no financial institution that will give you an unsecured loan for six per cent. The SLB is doing that,” highlighted Walsh

Furthermore, she mentioned the competitive nature of the postgraduate loan facility, where individuals pursuing doctorate and postgraduate studies can borrow up to J$1.8 million at an interest rate of 9.5 per cent unsecured. Walsh expressed pride in the SLB’s competitiveness, noting, “So, the SLB is, in fact, one of those competitive institutions that are making a mark.”

In addressing the challenges some borrowers may face in repaying their loans, Walsh assured the public that the SLB is willing to facilitate other arrangements.

“I’m encouraging persons, if you are finding difficulties in paying, come into the Bureau, we will look at how we can reschedule that loan and offer other grants or waivers for you to better serve your debt,” she added.
