State Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Franklin Witter is encouraging more registered farmers to get into livestock production.
This comes amid reports that only 15 per cent are actively engaged in the agricultural subsector.
In urging more farmers to pursue livestock production, Witter pointed out that the importation of live animals is duty-free.
“The small ruminant industry is one that presents significant opportunities for farmers, particularly our youth and female farmers. I want investors to truly capitalise on the potential of this sector,” Witter said as he sought to rally support for the small ruminant industry.
Witter was speaking at the training session for small ruminant farmers in May Pen, Clarendon.
While addressing farmers, the junior agriculture minister said the Government is committed to providing incentives for small ruminant farmers producing offspring with superior genetics to improve local livestock and decrease Jamaica’s dependence on imports.
He also affirmed the Government’s commitment to growth in the agricultural sector, reiterating plans to achieve food security.
The training session was sponsored by the World University Service of Canada (WUSC). WUSC Caribbean was commended for contributing to the development of the small ruminant industry.
