Tesla has officially initiated a recall for over 1.6 million electric vehicles (EVs) in China.

The announcement comes in compliance with the “Defective Automotive Product Recall Management Regulations” and the “Implementation Measures of the Defective Automotive Product Recall Management Regulations,” as reported by the Chinese State Administration for Market Regulation.

As of January 5, 2024, a total of 7,538 imported Model S and Model X electric vehicles, produced between October 26, 2022, and November 16, 2023, are set to be recalled due to a door unlock logic control issue, where the non-collision side door latch may detach in the event of a collision, potentially leaving the door unlocked and posing a safety hazard.

Tesla is using over-the-air (OTA) technology to perform software upgrades remotely free of charge. For vehicles that cannot undergo the remote upgrade, Tesla will coordinate with users through the Tesla service centre to ensure the software is updated, eliminating the identified safety hazards.

In addition to the door latch issue, a separate recall has been announced for 1,610,105 imported Model S and Model X vehicles. This recall focuses on the potential misuse of the automatic assisted steering function, increasing the risk of collisions and posing safety threats. Tesla plans to address this through a separate OTA upgrade to the affected vehicles. These functions aim to enhance automatic assisted steering control and provide reminders for drivers to adhere to driving regulations.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified through various channels, including registered mail, SMS, and the Tesla customer service hotline (400-910-0707).
