West Indies captain Kieron Pollard has described the team’s performance against England as ‘unacceptable’ following his side’s embarrassing six-wicket loss in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup in Dubai on Saturday.

The West Indies were bowled out for 55 in 14-2 overs but showed a bit of fight as they took four wickets while their opponents cruised to victory.

Only Chris Gayle made double figures for the West Indies, who made their second lowest T20 total.

“It was unacceptable, we accept that,” Pollard conceded afterwards.

“These sorts of games sometimes, we just need to bin it. For us, it’s just a matter of finding our straps. We haven’t batted well in our three games so far. We went out, guys tried to play their shots, and it didn’t come off.”

The West Indies lost their two warm-up matches against Pakistan and Afghanistan by seven wickets and 56 runs, respectively, having scored 130-7 and 133-5 in those losses. However, the disappointed captain did not believe the team will overreact to this latest defeat.

“I don’t think any sort of panic will come into our camp. It is what it is, we just need to take it on our chest and move on, this is international sport,” he said.

“Obviously, we play a lot of cricket around the world, and this is not the first time something like this has happened. We’ve played cricket around the world and we have the experience of games like this.”

Perhaps the only positive from the match was the performance of Akeal Hosein, who was a last minute replacement for the injured all-rounder Fabian Allen. Hosein took 2-24 for the West Indies that helped take some of the sting out of the defeat.

“Getting an opportunity because of the injury to Fabian Allen. Everything happens for a reason, and Akeal Hosein showed us what he can do,” Pollard said.

Meanwhile, winning captain Eoin Morgan praised his team and his bowlers, especially, for the comprehensive victory in their opening match.

“It’s as good as it gets. To start our campaign like that, all credit to our bowling unit. The guys were very disciplined, and we took our chances,” he said.

“I think Moeen Ali (who took 2-17) read the conditions beautifully, he took chances when his match-up was in his favour, and to take his opportunity like he has, after the success he’s had in the IPL was brilliant,” Morgan said.
