It’s hard to conceive that the tourist paradise of The Bahamas could descend into a murderous, violent hell hole where decent, law-abiding people should avoid.

With more than 20 people murdered this month already, the US Embassy in The Bahamas has issued a travel advisory warning tourists about the high levels of violence, robberies and murder sweeping the country.

Only last month there was a shark attack at a Sandals resort resulting in a fatality. This too has drawn the attention of the US Government.

The US Embassy in the Bahamas wrote: “ Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets. Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours are not consistently regulated.

“Watercraft may be poorly maintained and some operators may not have safety certifications. Always review and heed local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities. Never swim alone, regardless of your age or swimming skills. Keep within your fitness and swimming capabilities.

“Be mindful of sharks when swimming and engaging in water activities, as there have been recent fatal and non-fatal incidents involving sharks.”

Chuck Murphy, speaking from the Albany Resort said: “You think a small island wouldn’t be that hard to control but the crime and violence in the Bahamas is now out of control. Jamaica has a bad reputation but the Bahamas is now at the same level and tourists are taking a gamble coming here. They are targets for theft and robbery.

“The Government must get on [top of this] crime problem if it wants to continue to attract tourists. No one wants to come to paradise to get robbed or die.”
