Teddy Bishop scored an unbeaten 97 for West Indies U19s but his side fell to defeat by one wicket to England’s U19 in the second Youth ODI in Beckenham on Monday (September 6).

Bishop came to the crease after Matthew Nandu retired hurt with four runs and, together with Anderson Amurdan, took the West Indies to 64 inside 12 overs. The partnership was broken when Amurdan was bowled by England’s Fateh Singh for 22.

Bishop and Captain Akeem Auguste took the score to 86 when the captain lost his wicket, bowled by Matthew Prest for just six. Wickets fell regularly after that for the West Indies until Bishop found a useful partner in Isai Thorne.

Together, he and Thorne stitched together a six-wicket stand of 54 that helped the West Indies get to 180-9 from 39.3 overs. Thorne made 11 but other than Amurdan and Bishop, no other West Indies batsman made double figures as Prest finished with figures of 3-36.

Matthew Bethell supported with 3-39 and Sonny Baker 2-19.

With England needing to score 181 from 50 overs at a rate of 3.6 runs an over, their task seemed reasonably simple. It was anything but.

Prest and William Luxton, for 11 and 0, respectively as England stumbled to 26-2. However, Bethell and James Rew stitched together a stand of 53 for the third wicket before Bethell was eventually dismissed by Onaje Armory for 20.

Like Bishop, Rew was the glue that kept the England innings together scoring 63 as England moved steadily towards their target despite losing wickets at the other end. They were to receive a scare when Rew was run out to leave England at 155-5 and then proceeded to lose three additional wickets for just seven runs as England slid to 162-9 with 15 overs left to play.

Any hopes that the West Indies had of pulling off an unlikely victory were dashed as Singh and Nathan Bramwell scored the 19 runs required to take England to victory and a 2-0 lead in the series.

Thorne was the best of the West Indies bowlers with 3-54 while Armory ended with 2-42 and Anderson Mahase 2-34.

England took a 1-0 lead in the series on Saturday when they defeated the West Indies by 166 runs. England scored 289-9 with Bethell scoring 69, Rew, 59 and wicketkeeper Alex Horton, 53.

In reply, the West Indies got contributions from Amurdan who scored 33 and Nandu (21). Together they got the West Indies off to a solid opening stand of 46 but Prest took 5-18, Rehan Ahmed, 3-22 as the West Indies capitulated for 123 inside 30 overs.
