Here are 5 things to know about Kajay Rowe.
1. I wanted to be a teacher, and a part of me still does.
Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I genuinely enjoy helping people and there is something really fulfilling to me about being able to teach someone something they didn’t know before. Even now, if I had the time and knew where I could do it, I would happily teach children part-time, even for free.
My career obviously took me in a completely different direction, but I don’t think that part of me ever really went away. I still enjoy helping people figure things out, sharing what I know and seeing someone grow because I was able to help them along the way.
2. I studied IT, fell into marketing and never looked back.
I’ve always loved technology. When I went to university, my plan was actually to become a computer engineer. I chose to study IT because I wanted something that challenged me and forced me to figure out how things worked.
My first job after university happened to be an IT role at a marketing agency, and that was where everything changed. I started getting exposed to the marketing side of the business and realised that I loved it. I liked coming up with an idea, putting all the pieces together and then watching it go from something in my head to something real.
I also realised that my IT background gave me a different way of approaching marketing. My brain naturally works in a very logical, cause-and-effect way. I want to know why something works, what happens next and what the result should be. So even when I’m being creative, there is usually data, logic and a lot of thinking happening behind it.
I’ve never lost my love for technology either. I am usually the person who wants to try the newest technology rather than run from it. AI definitely doesn’t scare me. In fact, I always joke that when the robots eventually take over the world, I’ll probably be helping them do it.
3. One missed school trip completely changed the way I make plans.
When I was about eight years old, my school was going on a trip to Serenity Park and I was extremely excited. I planned everything weeks in advance. I knew what I was wearing, what I wanted to do and probably had the entire day mapped out in my head.
The night before the trip, I went to bed perfectly fine. The next morning, I woke up really, really sick and couldn’t go.
Apparently, eight-year-old me took that personally because I have never approached plans the same way since.
To this day, I don’t like getting too excited about anything too far in advance. I can know that I’m going somewhere, but I won’t allow myself to get completely excited until I am actually there. Ironically, I also make some of my biggest decisions very impulsively. I would much rather decide that I’m doing something and just do it than spend months thinking and planning every detail.
4. Everything is a phase for me, except pink.
I have favourites, but nobody should get too attached to them because they probably won’t be my favourites for very long.
I go through phases with almost everything. I can find a snack that I absolutely love, eat it constantly for a week and then suddenly move on to something completely different. The same thing happens with TV shows, songs and just about anything else I become obsessed with.
The only favourite that has survived every phase of my life is pink. Pink has always been my favourite colour and I love almost everything in pink. If I’m buying something and there is a pink version available, there is a very good chance that is the one I’m choosing.
5. I love travelling, but somehow I always end up back in New York.
I genuinely love travelling, and for me the enjoyment starts long before I arrive at the destination. I like airports. I like being on aeroplanes. I like that feeling of going somewhere different and experiencing a new place.
I also love travelling to places I’ve never been before, which makes it slightly ridiculous that I keep ending up in New York.
Almost every time I’m planning a trip, I tell myself, “I am not going to New York again.” Somehow, eight times out of ten, I end up there anyway.
I’ve been going to New York since I was a child, so I guess at this point I have to admit that it is probably my favourite city. What I love about it is that no matter how many times I visit, the experience is never exactly the same. There is always somewhere new to go, something different to do or a completely different version of the city to experience.
So yes, I want to see the world. I just apparently need to keep making stops in New York while I’m doing it.
