The month of November is being observed as Men’s Health Awareness Month, which is a time set aside for promoting awareness about the issues that affect men while sparking discussions about the best ways to help men overcome these challenges.

Studies have shown that the overall health-seeking behaviour of men is one of the leading causes for them to develop chronic health issues in the later stage of their lives.

A 2011 study conducted by the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry at The University of the West Indies (UWI), titled Health Status and Health-seeking Behaviour of Jamaican Men Fifty-five Years and Over, revealed that a majority of men (67.6 per cent) had not visited a doctor or health facility in the year prior to the survey. The survey had a sample size of 2,000 men between the ages 55−93 years, with a mean age of 67 years

Some of the reasons given by the men were an absence of illness, 44 per cent; the use of home remedies, 28.7 per cent; and not being able to afford health care, 21.9 per cent.

The primary health conditions reported by men 50 years and older were cancers, kidney or bladder conditions, hypertension, diabetes, and prostate.

Similar to physical health challenges, men also suffer from mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, which can have severe impacts on their overall health and well-being, if not addressed.

Family members and friends can play an important role in encouraging the men close to them to take greater responsibility for their overall health and well-being.

Ways to help our men get the help they need

  • The first step in assisting men in getting the help they need is to have an open conversation with them to allow them to share how they truly feel. Help them to know that they are cared for and supported.
  • Encourage them to adopt good health habits, including regular exercise, drinking adequate water, and maintaining a balanced diet.
  • Be an accountability partner by joining them to reach their health goals.
  • Encourage them to do their health screenings, this may include setting the appointment for them and ensuring that they visit the healthcare provider on the day of the appointment.
  • Encourage them to make time for rest and recreation
