The Wray & Nephew Fight Night Series has become a beacon of hope for local boxers, reigniting the passion for the sweet science in the Olympic Gardens community of Kingston.

The series, which will culminate on Saturday, December 16, with the Downtown Showdown at Breezy Castle, premiered six months ago at the Cling Cling Oval and has been a platform for both seasoned and emerging male and female boxers. These athletes, who have dedicated themselves to rigorous training regimens under the guidance of some of Jamaica’s leading boxing coaches, are now making waves not only in the ring but also within their communities.

Stephen ‘Bomma’ Jones, president of the Jamaica Boxing Board, spoke enthusiastically about the series’ impact and its role in preparing boxers for global competition. Jones noted that Fight Nights has elevated the sport and served as a powerful tool for community development.

The series has steadily gained momentum. Its unique blend of boxing, music, and community engagement has drawn attention, and the involvement of two Colombian pro boxers in the 2023 finale adds a new layer of diversity to the already exciting fight card.

Professional Boxer Jermaine Richards, known as ‘Breezy,’ highlighted the community-building benefits of the event, stating: “It is making a positive impact in the sense that it is allowing persons who love it to stay close to it.”

The series has not only showcased the talent of local boxers but has also heightened awareness of the sport in Jamaica. Richards expressed his love for boxing and the thrill of a fight, aspiring to be recognised as the champion from this event.

Pavel Smith, marketing manager at Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Limited, expressed that the programme brings positive sentiments, structure and focus to communities. Smith further expressed pride in supporting a sport deeply intertwined with Jamaican culture.
