Burger King Jamaica has officially announced Sunday, March 8, 2026, as the new date for its historic 20th Anniversary 5K & Relay at Emancipation Park. Originally scheduled for November 2025, the event was postponed in the wake of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, which caused widespread disruption and severe damage across Jamaica’s western parishes.

The reschedule comes after a noteworthy boost in investment, as Burger King transforms the event to welcome various community groups to a national lifestyle and wellness experience. To mark the milestone staging and support the nation’s spirit through wellness as rebuilding continues, the company has highlighted a record-breaking $2-million prize pool, double the previous year’s allotment, and aimed at incentivising community-wide participation.

“The decision to reschedule was a matter of national solidarity,” said Nadia Kiffin Green, Burger King Head of Sales and Marketing. “With our brothers and sisters in the West facing such immense recovery efforts, we felt it was only right to move the event to a time when we could truly come together as one. We aren’t just returning; we are returning with more—more time for the community to heal and more rewards to celebrate our collective resilience.”

The 2026 staging marks a strategic shift in the event’s 20-year history, and while student-athletes remain a core pillar, the brand is fully committed to the event embodying the theme, “The Race That Gives You More,” explicitly welcoming corporate teams, fitness clubs, and 5K enthusiasts.

Race Director Alfred “Frano” Francis stated that the event, which is now taking place in the peak fitness season, offers a unique return for participants. “There is no other race in Jamaica where every participant gets a medal, a shirt, and a meal, while also having the chance to win from a $2-million pool,” Francis stated. “We are inviting everyone, especially those looking to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle after a difficult year, to join us at Emancipation Park.”

Central to the new “lifestyle” focus, the prize pool now carries cash and prizes, such as the new BK Crown Challenge, which replaces the former “Big Finish” prize. The newly introduced BK Crown Challenge expands beyond participation team size, rewarding both size and speed across schools, corporations, and fitness communities. This year’s new structure rewards the power of participating in groups or as individuals, offering attractive cash and prize incentives for Individuals, Corporate teams, Gyms or Running Clubs and schools:

• $300,000 for the Largest Corporate Team
• $200,000 for the Fastest Corporate Team
• $200,000 for Premier Gyms & Community Clubs
• Over $1 million in School-Based Awards (Crown Challenge & Relay Prizes)

In a symbolic move of support, Burger King will also sponsor a select group of student-athletes from the hardest-hit western parishes to make it easier for them to participate in this annual tradition. Additionally, the largest team crowned under the BK Crown Challenge will win a $100,000 value in meal donations toward a western school of their choice, reinforcing that the race is about more than just the clock. It’s about fostering renewed commitment to youth development and national resilience to create community impact.

Registration is now open at Running Events Jamaica until March 4. Participants who previously registered for the November date are advised that their registrations remain valid for the March 8th staging.
