Next week Monday (July 26) sees a general election taking place in the Eastern Caribbean island of St Lucia.
This will be a face-off between the incumbent ruling party, the United Workers Party (UWP) led by Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and the Opposition’s St Lucia Labour Party whose leader is Phillip J. Pierre.
Speaking about his party’s chances of retaining power, Chastanet said: “St Lucia is one of the best-performing countries in this region and that efforts of this United Workers Party government are working.”
There are 17 seats in St Lucia’s House of Assembly. In the last general election held in June 2016, the UWP won 11 of the 17 seats.

The Government of St Lucia has invited CARICOM to monitor the upcoming general election and the regional body will be sending a ten-member mission there to do just that.
It will be headed by Fern Narcis-Scope who is the Chief Elections Officer of Trinidad and Tobago.
