Given the challenges that have plagued many of the CARICOM member states since the start of 2021, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is now deliberating the possibility of postponing its examinations.

Speaking during a post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday (May 20), Trinidadian Minister of Education Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, said: “As of Monday or Tuesday, CXC would have written expressing their views on possible postponement… .”

This postponement would allow students added time to prepare for their examinations, but could also pose future challenges particularly for students trying to get into university.

Given this, Gadsby-Dolly stated that she had informed CXC of Trinidad’s support of a possible examination start date postponement of no more than three weeks, in addition to an increased deadline for the submission of School Based Assessments (SBAs).

The minister explained that her position was fueled by the fact that a postponement of more than three weeks could result in further difficulties for students, such as a delayed release of examination results.

Following CXCS’s proposition of possible postponement, all member states had been asked to submit their views on the matter by May 20 and are now awaiting a final decision to be made.
