Every year coffee celebrations get underway in Jamaica to provide patrons with an insider look into the innovations of the island’s best coffee purveyors.

With two staple coffee events past, this year’s notable trends included sustainability, flavoured coffee and cold coffee drinks.

Learn more about the ever-evolving world of coffee with this list of the top four coffee trends to watch in 2023 and beyond.

Cold coffee drinks

Coffee served cold is still on trend. Whether it’s coffee shop ordered or done at home iced coffee or cold brew, coffee consumers can’t get enough.  The many benefits to opting for a cold coffee can account for its trendiness. Cold coffee drinks offer a refreshing and invigorating experience, especially during warm weather making it a winning option for Jamaicans.

Cold coffee drinks are also often visually appealing with their stylish presentation and aesthetically pleasing appearance, making them highly shareable on social media platforms. And lastly, the growing awareness and interest in different brewing methods, such as cold brewing, and the exploration of unique flavour profiles have further fueled the trendiness of chilled coffee beverages among coffee enthusiasts seeking new and innovative ways to enjoy their caffeine fix.

Flavoured instant coffee

Customised coffee house orders in a sachet? Jamaica Mountain Peak is on top of the world coffee trends with the introduction of its flavoured coffee line.

Showcased at the recent Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee festival, eager samplers choose between caramel, coconut and a fusion of cinnamon and nutmeg hot or cold drinks. The brand, through innovation, is delivering a convenient offering to meet the needs of the next generation of coffee drinkers.

Younger coffee customers

The other coffee trends in this list can be credited to this one trend. Young coffee customers are changing the narrative and engaging with coffee products the way they want to. As a result, the industry has shifted to meet the needs of these new types of consumers.

For younger coffee customers, coffee is more than a drink, it’s an experience. Events like the Blue Mountain Coffee Festival and coffee estate tours attract the younger coffee consumer because of this.

Sustainable coffee

Sustainable coffee refers to ethically sourced, high-quality products. This also means farmers and producers receive fair pay. The modern coffee drinker is knowledgeable, and they care about people and the planet. They want to know where their coffee comes from, how it was grown, and who grew it. As such coffee brands practicing sustainability are gaining favour from millennial consumers.

Salada Foods Jamaica is one of the companies making waves in sustainability with its recently launched “Grounds for Growth” initiative. The initiative will repurpose spent grounds to provide coffee farmers with a natural, biodegradable and cost-effective fertilizer.  Sustainability in coffee means higher yields and a better quality product.

Like the rest of the world, Jamaica is experiencing several emerging coffee trends. These trends are reshaping the Jamaican coffee industry and offering new opportunities for coffee producers and retailers to innovate and adapt to changing consumer preferences.
