Opposition Spokesperson on Industry and Investment Anthony Hylton is highlighting the importance of consumer protection and the need for robust safeguards to ensure consumer rights are upheld.

In observation of World Consumer Rights Day, Hylton, in a statement on Friday (March 15), declared his commitment to advocating for the protection of consumer rights and interests.

“In an era dominated by technological advancements, consumers face new challenges related to data rights, data protection, privacy, and the growing intrusiveness of online commerce. The proliferation of digital platforms and the collection of personal data raise important questions about consumer protection and the need for robust safeguards to ensure their rights are upheld,” Hylton stressed.

“I am proud to highlight that during the last PNP administration, significant strides were made in this regard with the establishment of the Consumer Protection Tribunal within the Consumer Affairs Commission. This tribunal serves as a vital mechanism for providing recourse and remedy to aggrieved consumers, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights protected,” said Hylton.

He further called for greater commitment to empowering consumers, enhancing consumer protection frameworks, and leveraging technology to create a safer and more equitable marketplace for all.

The day is geared towards higlighting the rights of consumers and protecting them from exploitation and unfair practices.
