The People’s National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) are rallying supporters as Jamaica awaits the official slate of nominated candidates for local government elections today.

Councillor-candidates will be officially nominated today, February 8, at designated nomination centres in each of the 63 constituencies across the island.

In recognition of the high stakes of this election, both parties have reached out to their supporters, urging them to show out in their numbers on election day, February 26.

Earlier today, the PNP announced that they are partaking in a tour of South St Andrew in support of the nomination of candidates. This is among multiple rallies and conferences that the opposition party is conducting to rally support.

Likewise, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has also urged its supporters to stick with their party.

In a message to supporters on social media today, the JLP noted that nomination day “marks an important step in our journey towards a better Jamaica!”

“As nominations unfold for councillors and candidates nationwide, we invite you to stand with the Jamaica Labour Party. Together, let’s support our dedicated JLP candidates, who are committed to #BuildingForYou and your communities. Your vote is crucial in our national effort to create a brighter future for all,” the ruling party wrote.

The JLP has also ramped up rallies and tours as they seek to build momentum for the long-awaited municipal elections.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie announced at the JLP’s campaign launch at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St James, on February 1, that the polls would take place on February 26.

The long-awaited elections were constitutionally due in 2020. However, they were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The elections were again postponed two additional times, with the Opposition party threatening that it would take legal action if the elections were further postponed.
