The JWN Foundation celebrated the accomplishments of its 2026 secondary scholars on August 31, recognising the 69 scholarship recipients who were able to attend its annual Secondary Scholars Movie Day & Awards Ceremony at Palace Cineplex. 

Scholars from Kingston, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth joined parents, volunteers and support team members for an event that highlighted the impact of educational support and academic commitment. The initiative forms part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to transforming lives and communities through its Education & Infrastructure Development pillar by supporting and empowering young people through access to educational opportunities that encourage academic excellence and personal growth. 

The event recognised secondary scholars who successfully earned scholarships under the Foundation’s 2026 programme and provided an opportunity for students to connect with peers from other focus communities.

The programme’s featured agenda item was an inspiring keynote presentation from former JWN

Foundation scholar Rickardo Anderson, who reflected on his own scholarship journey and encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities before them. According to him, “Truthfully, I didn’t think I would get the scholarship. In fact, I was in a taxi when I got the news, and I was screaming because I was so shocked and grateful. I even shed a one tear.”

He went on, “Receiving support from the JWN Foundation was more than financial assistance. It was a reminder that someone believed in my potential and was willing to invest in my future. I encourage every scholar here today to embrace this opportunity, work hard, remain focused on your goals, and never underestimate the impact that education can have on transforming your life,” he ended.

Students were also recognised during a special awards segment highlighting outstanding academic achievement. Sudain Palmer and Adamanie Francis both walked away as the Overall

Top Pep Scholars

Each scholar received a commemorative trophy, a specialised plaque and a back-to-school package containing essential stationery supplies to support their academic journey in the new school year.

In addition to the awards presentation, all scholars received back-to-school packages, enjoyed a private screening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, refreshments and opportunities to build new friendships with fellow awardees while interacting with members of the JWNF team. The experience was designed to not only celebrate student achievement but also foster a sense of community among scholarship recipients.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Clement ‘Jimmy’ Lawrence, Director of the JWN Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to investing in Jamaica’s future through education. “Our scholars represent the determination, resilience and potential that exist within our communities. Today is about recognising their hard work, celebrating their success, and reminding them that the JWN Foundation is committed to supporting their continued growth and development. We are proud of each scholar and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will create in their schools, their communities and beyond,” he ended.

The JWN Foundation Scholarship Programme provides support to students from communities in Kingston, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth, as well as dependents of Camparistas, helping to reduce financial barriers to education while creating pathways for academic and personal success.

Through scholarships, scholastic grants, mentorship opportunities and scholar engagement activities, the Foundation continues to create meaningful impact in the lives of young Jamaicans.

The Secondary Scholars Movie Day & Awards Ceremony is one of several scholar engagement initiatives hosted by the Foundation each year. It is complemented by programmes such as leadership development activities, volunteer opportunities, and the upcoming Personal Branding Workshop & Awards Ceremony for tertiary scholars.
