The Mico University College, formerly The Mico Teachers’ College and the oldest teacher-training institution of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, is celebrating its 190th anniversary under the theme, “Honouring Our Legacy: Shaping the Future in Education.”

Founded in 1836, The Mico has helped to shape generations of educators whose influence has extended beyond the classroom into communities and national life across Jamaica, the Caribbean and the wider world.

President Dr Asburn Pinnock said the milestone provides an opportunity to celebrate the institution’s extraordinary journey while looking confidently towards its future. “For 190 years, The Mico has remained committed to education, leadership and service. Generations of Miconians have gone forward to shape schools, communities and nations. We celebrate their contribution and the enduring tradition of excellence upon which this institution has been built.”

The anniversary celebrations will formally begin with an Ecumenical Service on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. in the historic Buxton Quadrangle at the University College.

A highlight will be the reading of a Proclamation issued by the Governor-General of Jamaica, His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, recognising the institution’s historic milestone. The sermon will be delivered by former Lord Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, The Most Reverend Dr the Honourable Howard K. Gregory, O.J. 

Government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of education, industry and commerce, alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of The Mico have also been invited to attend.

Established shortly after Emancipation, The Mico was among four teacher-training institutions established in the British colonies through the Lady Mico Charity. It is the only one of those institutions to have survived and developed into the 21st century.

Dr Pinnock attributed The Mico’s longevity to its ability to evolve while remaining faithful to its educational mission. “The story of The Mico is one of indomitable spirit, steadfast purpose, an unyielding commitment to excellence, and continuous transformation. From a teachers’ college to an accredited university college offering undergraduate and graduate programmes, The Mico has continued to respond to the changing needs of education.”

He added that the anniversary must also provide an opportunity to consider the institution’s future. “We cannot celebrate 190 years by looking only backwards. Our history places upon us a responsibility to look forward. The Mico must continue to shape the future as it prepares educators and leaders who can innovate, adapt and respond confidently to the demands of a rapidly changing world.”

The 2026–2027 anniversary celebrations will bring together Miconians, friends and supporters in Jamaica, the Caribbean and the diaspora in reflection, thanksgiving and celebration.

Several commemorative activities are planned, including a distinguished lecture series, academic, sporting and musical events, special publications and a gala, among others.
