Cancer remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in Jamaica, according to the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Against this backdrop, advances in lymphoma treatment are enabling more patients to access complex therapies without spending extended periods in the hospital. The combination of medical innovation, specialised monitoring and stronger safety protocols is transforming the way certain types of blood cancers are treated.

On World Lymphoma Awareness Day, specialists highlight that some treatments that traditionally required hospitalisation can now be administered on an outpatient basis for carefully selected patients. This shift allows individuals to receive highly specialised care while remaining closer to their families and maintaining many of their daily activities.

Dr. Yuliya Linhares, medical oncologist and Chief of Lymphoma Services at Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute, explains that advances in medicine have created new possibilities for people facing this disease. She has extensive expertise in comprehensive lymphoma care, stem cell transplantation and clinical research focused on improving patient outcomes.

“Advances in lymphoma treatment allow us to offer certain therapies in an outpatient setting for carefully selected patients. This means many people can receive highly specialised care without prolonged hospital stays while maintaining the same standards of safety and clinical monitoring,” says Dr Linhares.

Advanced treatments closer to everyday life

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system and includes several subtypes that require specific treatment approaches. In recent years, the development of new therapies has expanded the options available for people with recurrent disease or more complex cases.

Part of this progress has involved moving certain treatments from traditional hospital settings to highly supervised outpatient programs. Thanks to a better understanding of potential side effects, more advanced monitoring tools and specialised teams prepared to intervene quickly when needed, some patients can receive complex therapies outside the hospital with favourable outcomes.

Recent research has shown that certain outpatient treatments can maintain strong safety and efficacy profiles while preserving or improving several quality-of-life measures reported by patients themselves. These findings help redefine how care is delivered for some forms of lymphoma.

Greater comfort without compromising safety

In addition to reducing time spent in the hospital, this approach offers practical benefits for patients and their families. Spending more time at home can facilitate support from loved ones, reduce disruptions to everyday life, and improve the overall treatment experience.

“Innovation is allowing more patients to receive advanced lymphoma treatments without extended hospital stays. This progress combines strong clinical outcomes with a more comfortable experience for people undergoing treatment,” adds Dr Linhares.

As advances in research, personalised medicine and cellular therapies continue, experts expect more patients to benefit from care models tailored to their individual needs. For people living with lymphoma, these developments represent an opportunity to access effective treatment through an approach that is increasingly flexible, safe and patient-centred.
