With the expected surge in traffic as a result of the new academic year gets underway, the National Works Agency (NWA) says commuters who travel the Harbour View to Yallahs leg of the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project (SCHIP) will now have access to two paved lanes to aid in the free flow of traffic along the corridor.
The agency, in a statement on Friday, September 1, said that special provisions will be made to ensure ease of travel on sections of the SCHIP.
Stacy-Ann Delevante, acting manager of communication and customer services at the NWA, said the traffic management strategies are being put in place to handle the anticipated increase that usually accompanies the start of the academic year.
Delavante further said that while the work to complete the expansion of the corridor continues, there will be a tidal flow mechanism implemented to ease congestion between Shooters Hill and the Cane River Bridge.
“During the morning peak hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., persons utilising the section of the roadway from Stella Road to Cane River Bridge will utilise two lanes heading toward Kingston. Persons travelling toward Yallahs during the same period will utilise a single lane. During the evening peak hours of 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the opposite flow will obtain,” the agency outlined.
It further noted that clear signs will be posted along the corridor and where necessary, there will be flag persons in place to guide motorists traversing the thoroughfare.
