For what has turned out to be Jamaica’s best day so far at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Antonio Watson secured Jamaica’s second goal medal of the day after winning the 400m final in 44.22 seconds.
Watson edged out his closest competitor, Matthew Hudson-Smith of the UK, who clinched the silver medal with a time of 44.31 seconds. The battle for bronze was equally intense, with Quincy Hall of the US securing the third spot on the podium with a time of 44.37 seconds, a personal best for him.
The fourth place was claimed by Vernon Norwood, who finished with a time of 44.39 seconds, followed closely by Watson’s compatriot Sean Bailey, crossing the line at 44.96 seconds. Håvard Bentdal Ingvaldsen and Wayde Van Niekerk also put on impressive performances, finishing at 45.08 seconds and 45.11 seconds, respectively.
Notably, the race was not without its share of drama as former Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada was disqualified.
