American rapper and actor Earl Simmons, known by the stage name DMX or Dark Man X, has died at age 50, People magazine reported on Friday (April 9), after the musician was hospitalised for what reports said was a heart attack during a drug overdose.

It’s been a tumultuous few hours for fans of the musician, who went into a frenzy on Thursday after close friend Comedian Luenell, mistakenly tweeted he had died.

DMX’s manager, Steve Rifkind, took to Instagram to set the record straight and dismissed rumours.

The rapper has become the number one trending topic on Twitter for the second time in as many days as tributes flow in his memory.
