With more Jamaicans suffering from what is being termed “the bad flu”, Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie, is advising the public to remain at home and monitor themselves if they develop mild flu-like symptoms.
In a public service announcement released on Wednesday (January 12), Bisasor-McKenzie stated: “The Ministry of Health and Wellness wishes to remind the public that if they develop mild flu-like symptoms they are to remain at home and monitor themselves while observing the infection prevention and control measures.”
The announcement continued, informing the public that if symptoms worsen or persist beyond three days, medical advice should be sought from private practitioners, the health centre or from the parish health department.
Bisasor-McKenzie noted that persons may be advised to do a coronavirus (COVID-19) test, which can be done privately or in the public health system by referral.
She furthered: “A list of public health testing sites is available on the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ website. Persons with severe symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.”
The CMO reiterated the importance of the public’s continued adherence to the infection prevention and control measures, stating: “All persons are encouraged to frequently wash their hands, wear a mask and get vaccinated. If you are due a booster, take the booster; observe physical distancing; avoid crowded spaces; stay hydrated; exercise regularly; and eat healthy, so that you can protect yourselves and fight COVID-19.”
