Stephen Colbert, a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, is bringing his love for the fantasy world to the big screen, this time alongside his son, John.

Warner Bros announced that Colbert will co-write ‘The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past‘ with Peter McGee, his son, and returning series writer Philippa Boyens.

The film follows a new adventure for Sam, Merry, and Pippin, set 14 years after Frodo’s passing, and arrives after Andy Serkis’ upcoming The Hunt of Gollum hits theaters next year. Colbert revealed that the idea came from a conversation with his son a few years ago, sparking a unique framing for the story that blends fresh imagination with Tolkien’s beloved world.
