Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is advising the public that it will no longer accept cheques as a method of payment for taxes and other public monies, effective September 1.
However, TAJ has indicated certain exceptions to this rule, such as instances where a valid cheque is issued by another ministry, department, or public body or where a valid Manager’s Cheque is issued by a local licensed Commercial Bank regulated by the Bank of Jamaica.
This policy shift is part of TAJ’s continued efforts to modernise its operations, strengthen risk management, and enhance the efficiency, security and reliability of its payment processes.
With this new policy, customers are being encouraged to use other available payment options, such as logging on to the tax portal at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm and using a valid debit or credit card, using the Direct Funds Transfer, NCB Online Banking or Scotia Online.
TAJ reports that while it understands this change may raise questions, it reiterates its commitment to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
