Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has been named Britain’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year at a ceremony in the Manchester Opera House, in Manchester, UK.

The Portuguese footballer racked up 21 assists last season and played an instrumental role in Manchester United climbing to third in the EPL.

Fernandes put in a good performance for Portugal in this year’s World Cup.

On winning the prestigious award, Fernandes said: “ Winning this, being voted by the ones that every week go out on the pitch against me, is something that makes me very proud.

“Because they’ve been there, they’re playing against me, they’ve seen what I’m capable of doing and for them to vote for me is something I’m very grateful for. It’s always nice to see the name of the club in these kinds of awards, and obviously the players stand out with the club behind them. That’s very important for us.

“I hope that from now on we can have even more players from our club having this kind of recognition because it’s also important and means that we’re doing something very good.”

“Individually, you want to have these accolades to show that your game is helping the team and that there are a lot of good things you’ve been doing to help them.”

Fernandes also won Premier League Player of the Season and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

Reflecting on last season, Fernandes said: “It was a special season, individual for me. And obviously, I’m very proud of all the ones that have decided to help me.

“I haven’t thought about the assists record much until you guys started commenting so much. Obviously, then when you start getting closer, you start thinking about it and everything.

“ But I think it got more into my strikers and into myself. The more so, you get to score the goal and to give me that feeling that sometimes they even forget about their own game. But I’m very happy because assisting means that someone is getting goals, and mostly if I’m assisting, Manchester United is getting goals.”

Fernandes surpassed both Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, both with 20 assists a season, which was the previous record.
